This is a final look at the Rams 30-7 win Friday night over Susquehanna Township that extended their winning streak in season openers to 10 years.
Analysis: The Rams came out of the gate fast, scoring on game’s opening drive, and then didn’t let up the balance of game against a potentially dangerous Susquehanna Township squad.
What made this win so impressive was the fact that the Rams fielded a team loaded with players seeing their first action in a varsity game. Their lack of game experience didn’t show, which is a feather in the cap of the Rams hard-working coaching staff led by Glen McNamee.
There wasn’t anything flashy about the offensive performance – they quietly got the job done with running backs Mike Wise-Belle and Kollin McCullough piling up 73 and 74 yards respectively.
The biggest bang occurred in the first quarter when Rams kicker and punter Ethan Van Buskirk sent the ball through the updates from 49 yards. He scored 12 points – three field goals and three extra points. Ethan’s potent leg could be the deciding factor in a game or two when the youthful Rams start play in the tough Mid Penn Commonwealth Division.
On defense, the Rams came within a play of pitching a shutout. After keeping Susquehanna Township’s pitch-and-catch game in check for the three quarters, the Indians sophomore quarterback Rashaan Carlton hit on an 84-yard pass play along the left-hand sideline with about six minutes left in the contest. The receiver, Roland Norfleet, beat the Rams cornerback and was off to the races when the safety went for the ball and missed.
Adam Burkhart, #46, statistically lead the Rams defensive game with four tackles, two assists and two tackles for loss.
The season opener was just what the doctor ordered as a warm up for the always tough Manheim Township Blue Streaks who will host the Rams this Friday at 7 pm.
